DulceAlthough she is highly educated, much of Dulce Dangis’s success at work is the result of her self-taught experiences. The new director of nursing at The Springs at Monarch Landing has degrees in both nursing and law, and has worked in both fields.

Dulce came to the U.S. from the Philippines in 2006, having been sponsored by a long-term care provider. At the time, she said, “I’d finished nursing school, attended law school and was working as a barrister.” In the U.S., she started out as a floor nurse, moving through the ranks to p.m. supervisor, assistant director of nursing, and director of nursing. “At each level, I had to step in and step up, most of the time without formal training. I had to learn on my own. I would check the binders in the office and take them home to study them,” she recalled. Dulce remained with the long-term care provider for 12 years, before deciding to make a change when she found the director of nursing position at The Springs Health and Rehab Center at Monarch Landing.

“I liked the fact that The Springs is highly-rated, and focused on a home-like setting. Everybody talks about resident-centered care, but it’s something that’s really part of the culture at The Springs. The feeling is so different and positive,” she said. “There’s a very supportive management team. And the residents and their families are great!”

Having been in long-term care for many years, Dulce said that she knew the healthcare was something she worked hard and did well at. “But it took a while for me to realize that it was having such a positive impact on peoples’ lives. Family members come up to me and talk about the care that their loved one is receiving from our staff, and I know it’s because of the way that the staff had been trained and how important the residents are to them. There is so much satisfaction in having our efforts appreciated,” she said. “What the staff does is a given…They work hard and really take great care of our residents and guests, which is expected. But it’s still appreciated that they’re recognized and complimented for their care so often.”
