There’s No Place Like Home: Monarch Landing Celebrates 20 Years of Community, Connection and the People Who Made the Journey Magical

Monarch Landing senior living community in Naperville recently marked its 20th anniversary during its annual Resident Appreciation Week. The special tradition recognizes the residents who make the community so special, while thanking the dedicated team members who help make it feel like home. The weeklong event brought residents, families, guests and team members together for a series of activities celebrating connection, gratitude and community.

Resident Appreciation Week Brings the Monarch Landing. Community Together

Residents and team members enjoyed a visit from the legendary Jesse White Tumblers, including a special appearance by Monarch Landing team member Marshall Dillard. Other highlights included a showing of The Wizard of Oz, spirited chair pickleball and water volleyball competitions between residents and team members, and an open house showcasing Monarch Landing’s many shared spaces and amenities, including the library, wood and hobby shop, Treasure Chest Resale Shop and model railroad room.

The week also featured a community awareness presentation by Senator Laura Ellman, a classic car show, live entertainment by Monarch Landing’s Rolling Millstones, karaoke, and a TGIF Happy Hour filled with music, conversation and laughter.

Following the Yellow Brick Road

The highlight of the week, a Wizard of Oz themed anniversary party titled There’s No Place Like Home, transformed Monarch Landing into the beloved storybook setting. Guests followed a yellow brick road through the halls while a three-dimensional cyclone, dramatic lighting and themed décor created a magical atmosphere. Team members fully embraced the experience by arriving in Wizard of Oz inspired costumes.

Executive Director Mark Trnka, dressed as the Wizard of Oz himself, explained why the theme felt so fitting.

“Like Dorothy stepping onto the yellow brick road, Monarch Landing began as a vision, a dream and a purpose,” Mark said. “Along the way, Dorothy discovered that the most important part of any journey isn’t simply the destination. It’s the people who walk beside you.”

He continued:

“Over the past 20 years, we’ve had our own cast of remarkable characters along the yellow brick road, people who have demonstrated incredible heart, courage, wisdom and generosity. Together, they have shaped Monarch Landing into something far greater than a place to live.”

Honoring The Original Residents and Team Members

One of the afternoon’s most meaningful moments came when Mark recognized 19 residents who were among the very first to move into Monarch Landing when it opened 20 years ago. He also honored six original team members whose dedication helped establish the culture that continues to define the community today.

Together, these pioneers helped lay the foundation for the vibrant, welcoming community Monarch Landing has become. Their stories, along with the community’s evolution over the past two decades, will continue to be highlighted throughout the anniversary year.

After all, while Dorothy discovered that home was where she belonged. Monarch Landing has spent the past 20 years creating a place where people continue to build friendships, pursue passions and discover new adventures.
